Christy Doran's NEW BAG
Crossing the musical horizon
Christy Doran has, through his expressive style, an excellent reputation as an untiring searcher, an obstinately creative musician, who crosses the border between Jazz and Rock with a trend to unusual mixing of proportions. ~ Christof Hegi, Tagesanzeiger Zürich
BIO
The contrast to his music is considerable. Soft and cool are the wrong words for it, i.e., it really has to spark between Doran and his fellow travelers, New Bag. Need it be said that their sound plays with elements of rock, ethno, jazz and syncopated rhythms? You can say it, but that's not all. An interesting fact is that the band has been touring the globe since 1997, and that's something you can really hear. The compositions were from Doran in the beginning, then the world came and music was created that fires enthusiasm. Not in everyone. But at least everyone is surprised after their concerts, often exhausted too. Even people who don't understand the degree of musical refinement that is echoed through the concert hall (very loud) will testify to the fact that these grooves really get you up and dancing - and your legs understand instinctively what it is all about. This is typical for New Bag, the antithesis to boring music, to the worn-out paths of jazz.
Whoever goes so consistently on his path in life has to change. The original quartet has been supplemented by a keyboarder Hans-Peter Pfammatter; the bassist Wolfgang Zwiauer, who recently felt the band, has been replaced by Vincent Membrez, uncertain when nobody was sure what the future would bring after the premature death of the drummer of many years Fabian Kuratli. Fortunately, a musician was found in Dominik Burhalter who is also comfortable working in the role of producer and consequently influences the band overall. As a result, the latest version of New Bag was created with Bruno Amstad on the microphone and Christy Doran on guitar: a musical ball of lighting, which sometimes sounds as if the avant-garde electronic musician Aphex Twin had fusioned by mistake with Tony Williams' Emergency! to rock again as if there were no past, only the future. ~ R.A. Dominik Burkhalter - drums
drummer and composer from Switzerland, recently back in Zurich after a yearlong stint as an artist in residence in New York, is one of the most versatile and sought after drummers in Europe. Being from a younger generation, he's not only a jazz drummer by heart and attitude but also a modernist to the core - playing breakbeats and grooves with a precision that rivals Swiss clockworks, as one can hear in bands like Asphalt Jungle and DOM. With Vault, one of his own projects with partners HP Pfammater and Young Gods producer Roli Mosimann, Burkhalter excessively pushes a musical style that defies any categorization except that it's beyond jazz, intelligent and loud.
He's also a regular with Christy Doran's New Bag, Domenico Ferrari, Burhan Oecal, Reto Suhner, Swiss Popstar Emel and together with New Yorker hotshots Leo Tardin and Mike Ladd they form Grand Pianoramax.
Burkhalter performed all over Europe as well as in the US, in legendary venues like the Filmore in San Francisco, the Roxy in LA and House of Blues in Vegas and at Jazzfestivals like Montreux, Vienne and countless others. In his free time, he's offering mixing and recording services in his fully equipped drum-studio and as a visiting professor he teaches rhythm and drums at the University of Arts and Music in Lucerne, Switzerland.
